6 Strategies To Safeguard Your Site and Equipment From Construction Theft

Did you know that the true cost of construction theft in Australia amounts to over $1 million per week. This is a 10% increase in the last 5 years, so it shows no signs of slowing down. Even though many construction owners are doing more to protect their assets than ever before there’s still plenty more that they could and should be doing. With this in mind, here are 6 simple strategies every construction owner really should be adopting.

Lighting up

You might think that leaving lights on during non working hours is wasteful but the fact is that construction sites are full of dark areas and recesses where burglars and vandals love to operate. So why not make it difficult for them? Use spotlights to cast light onto dark areas or motion sensors to catch people in the act.

Making your mark

By marking all your equipment it’s going to make it easier for the authorities to track down should it get pinched. Why not go one step further and record and photograph it too. This way, it’s easier to keep tabs on it at any time.

You’re watching them!

Install prominent signage warning burglars that your yard is being watched. It could be ‘cameras on premises’ or ‘regular security patrols around this area’ but whatever it is, let them know that you’re watching them.

CCTV

Okay so you’ve put up the signage but now you need to back it up with CCTV. It pays to purchase the best that you can, particularly high definition cameras.

Outsourcing security

Clearly you can’t monitor your site 24/7 but you might want to outsource your security needs to a reputable security company. This could be by utilising on-site security staff during non-working hours or alternatively via a monitoring station whereby your site is being constantly watched from close quarters.

Check them in and check them out

Because construction sites have multiple people from multiple companies working in the same place at the same time it can make for easy opportunities to steal. By operating tight access and exit controls you’re telling the people on site that you’re watching them. Most thieves are opportunist so by presenting them with only limited opportunities to steal they may think twice before doing so.
